10 AI Tools Every Designer Should Know

“Artificial intelligence is neither good nor bad. It is a neutral reflection of those who imprint them.”

— Emmanuel Apetsi

The growing deluge of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) tools has kept simplifying lives and presenting us with new ways of exploring things we love to do.

The buzz about the prowess of AI tools made waves on the internet last year when an AI-generated artwork won first place in an art competition.

It is no doubt ever since many have explored AI tools in every aspect of their design works. However, these AI technologies have been lurking in the background for a while now.

Many of your favorite applications you grew up using had AI embedded in them, just that their impact was minimal compared to how we openly interact with them with ease today due to technological advancements.
So you see, AI is here to stay, and it is not going to put designers out of a job as most people think but rather present them with new tools and ways to create amazing stuff.

Now let me introduce you to 10 AI tools every designer should know. These AIs fall under the broad term Generative AI, which involves using Artificial Intelligence to generate novel content such as text, image, audio, video, code, NFT, and 3D.

  1. DALL-E & DALL-E 2

OpenAI created deep learning models dubbed DALL-E and DALL-E 2 to produce digital pictures from “prompts” or natural language descriptions. DALL-E, which uses a GPT-3 variant that has been altered to create images, was unveiled by OpenAI in a blog post in January 2021.

What makes DALL-E and DALL-E 2 different from one another? DALL-E 2 is an upgraded version of DALL-E that produces four times more realistic and accurate pictures. When assessors were asked to compare 1,000 picture generations from each model, DALL-E 2 outperformed DALL-E 1 in terms of caption matching and photorealism.

2. MIDJOURNEY

Midjourney is the most robust of the text-to-image generative AIs. Similar to OpenAI’s DALL-E and Stable Diffusion, Midjourney is an independent research lab that develops a proprietary artificial intelligence tool with the same name that generates visuals from textual descriptions. On July 12, 2022, the tool entered open beta, which it is presently in.

Midjourney has made great strides in recent months, and yes, this was the AI that helped Jason Allen win an art competition in Colorado, USA. He created his artwork by turning his lines of text into hyper-realistic graphics.
You can do it too. Start here: Midjourney.

3. CHAT GPT

Launched by OpenAI in November 2022, ChatGPT uses GPT (Generative Pre-training Transformer), a language model developed by OpenAI. It uses deep learning techniques to generate human-like text.

In terms of use cases, GPT is used for various natural language generation tasks, such as automated content creation, chatbots, and text summarization. It can also be used for language translation and question answering. Additionally, some designers use GPT for creative applications like writing poetry, song lyrics, and stories. The model is trained on a massive amount of text data, allowing it to understand and generate a wide range of languages. The model can be fine-tuned for specific tasks and industries, such as legal or medical language.
It boasts of being the first startup to amass 1 million users in just five days.

4. JASPER AI

Will it not be seen as a superpower if someone could rapidly produce creative, high-quality material for emails, advertisements, websites, classifieds, blogs, and more in seconds while saving time and money? Surprisingly, Jasper AI is making that possible.

Jasper is a link between your expertise and the production of AI content. The most recent developments in artificial intelligence technology (GPT-3) powers Jasper through templates, recipes, and instructions to comprehend and learn from your writing style, preferences, and ideas to produce written material. Using this knowledge, Jasper creates and recommends concepts that suit your creative style.

Luma AI gives everyone the power to create 3D renders effortlessly. The goal of Luma is to make it possible for everyone to record and enjoy the environment in realistic 3D. To bring the next functional transformation in how we browse goods and environments on the internet, exchange memories, and create new ones to advance visual media into our mixed-reality 3D future.

Luma AI utilizes NeRF (Neural Radiance Field), a fully connected neural network and algorithm that can generate novel views of complex 3D scenes based on a partial set of 2D images.

7. RUNWAY

RunwayML is an AI tool that streamlines your entire video editing process; it unleashes a new wave of creativity and storytelling. It has become possible to automate the laborious editing processes, such as working with green screens, using brushes and other tools to mark places in detail, spending hours creating art, etc., with machine learning technology.

Runway creates graphics using ML and AI and chooses which areas to edit on its own using predictions and pattern recognition.
The fun part is you can do all these in your browser.
Give it a try: Runway ML.

8. SYNTHESIA

Synthesia is an artificial intelligence (AI) video creation platform that enables you to swiftly make videos with AI avatars in more than 60 languages. Simple enough:

Final Thoughts

Has the designer suddenly vanished? Right now, the answer is…no.
But you may start using these and the numerous other AI technologies at this exact moment to support the realization of your idea.

Practice a script to be sure it will convey what you want to express and create fine art, website, 3D design, etc.; AI is making that possible. You must understand when to use more traditional methods and when to push technology as far as you can as the video maker.
How do you feel? Is this how content will be made in the future? Or will it be a nightmarish future beyond anything we’ve ever experienced? Let me know.
